September - October is a great season for targeting barramundi (barramundi season closes on the 7th of October and they cannot be targeted from that date on.).
September - December are the months when permit are found in numbers on the beaches north and south of the Weipa township. Plus all the other species listed above are available to catch this time of year.
It is best to avoid fishing in these waters in December/January as the winds are unpredictable and often strong.
About your Fishing Guide
Kurt has lived in Weipa for over 30 years, and is the son of an avid Barra fisherman and lure maker, he developed a strong passion for fishing at an early age. Kurt has fished all over Cape York, and has extensive knowledge of the waterways around Weipa and the Cape, both fresh and saltwater.
Through this vast experience in the area, Kurt knows where particular fish feed and congregate, depending on the time of year and season. He is experienced in all forms of fishing, from using timber lures to soft plastics and of course the holy grail…..fly fishing. He loves sharing his knowledge and experience, but he also loves showing off his part of the world.
Fly Fishing with industry legend Peter “Windy” Wilson, Australian Fly Casting Champion, has allowed Kurt to put his best foot forward when it comes to guiding fly. Overall his years of fishing, Kurt has gained extensive knowledge of the best times, tides and locations to target different species of fish.
Weipa offers a wide range of fly fishing options such as targeting Barramundi and Mangrove Jack in our Estuaries, site casting for Permit, Blue Bastards and Tusk Fish on our coastal flats, or venturing out wide into the blue water to fish our famous bait balls just to name a few.
