Rainforest Paddle
We have created this non-fishing version of our kayak fishing experience due to overwhelming demand.
In the early morning or late afternoon, travel through the lush macadamia and dairy country of the Northern Rivers and enjoy a welcome hot coffee on arrival at Rosebank, about 40 minutes west of Byron Bay. Meet your private guide and get ready for a full safety briefing and allocation of kayaks.
You'll probably see a platypus or two. Platypus are crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk) so it is best to look for them about an hour before sunset and about an hour after sunrise. They are incredibly shy hard to spot. They like still water and steep banks (where they burrow during the day). The platypus only hold their breath for about 2 minutes, so if they’re swimming in the creek you should see them. The key this to look for deep concentric circles and then some bubbles will appear in the bullseye on the circle.
For the best chance of spotting a platypus...
Look for circles and bubbles
Be super quiet
Be patient
It is important to note that the platypus in the creek are wild and there is no guarantee that you will see them. We know of two family burrows and the best place to spot them, but there are never any guarantees. You will, however, enjoy the incredible rainforest on the paddle.
